Tony Wilson : Broadcaster - Cultural Catalyst

 

In death as in life: Peter Saville and Ben Kelly's memorial to their friend and collaborator Anthony H Wilson is three years late, but well worth the wait.

Factory Records founder Anthony H. Wilson died in August 2007.

Just over three years later (no client rushing them), a memorial headstone designed collaboratively by Wilson's long-term associates Peter Saville (Joy Division cover designer) and Ben Kelly with Paul Barnes and Matt Robertson, was unveiled in The Southern Cemetery in Chorlton-Cum-Hardy, Manchester.

The black granite headstone carries a quote chosen by Wilson's family from The Manchester Man, the 1876 novel by Mrs G Linnaeus Banks (aka Isabella Varley Banks), the story of one Jabez Clegg and his life in Victorian Manchester.

The quote is set in Rotis by typographer Matt Robertson.

Jaguar C-X75 Electric Supercar

In celebration of the brand’s 75th anniversary, Jaguar took the wraps off its C-X75 concept car at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

The Jaguar C-X75, which is a range-extended electric sports car, is intended to gives us a look into the company’s future design philosophy, which calls for the production of beautiful, faster and greener cars.

As a range extended EV, the C-X75 is powered by four 195-hp electric motors—one for each wheel—for a combined output of 780-hp and 1,180 lb ft of torque.

With just the lithium-ion batteries in use, the concept has a range of 68 miles. After the batteries runs out, the C-X75 uses two gas engines (that produce a combined 188 HP) to extend the range to 560 miles.

Mated to a single-speed transmission, the Jaguar C-X75 goes from 0-62 mph in 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 205 mph.

Peg O' The Day : Sun Surface

Witness a close-up of the sun as you've never seen it.

The twisting tubes, known as spicules, are fiery jets of fast-moving superheated gas that constantly burst from the solar surface.

At around 300 miles in diameter they spurt upwards from the sun at supersonic speeds of 45,000mph.

They can be likened to pipes of gas, each as wide as a small country and as long as half the Earth.

This picture, taken by astronomer Dr. Kevin Reardon, covers just 65,000 square miles.
