Each talks about their creative process, technique, and influences as cameras follow them to key locations in their own music history.

Jack White making his own guitar might be the highlight for me.

WASTELAND_MOVIE

Artist Vik Muniz joins creative forces with Brazil's catadores––garbage pickers who mine treasure from the world's largest landfill, Rio's enormous Jardim Gramacho.

With touching empathy, Muniz then creates portraits of them from the very trash they collect for him (see above.)

In this oak-leaf-clustered documentary the catadores reveal themselves to be unique and surprising individuals in their own right, waxing philosophical as they impart valuable lessons about what society discards.

I might rattle on here about discovery of self and the dignity of labor, but I shall resist.

Documentarian Stephen Kijak pays tribute to the influential and enigmatic Scott Walker who shunned pop stardom for a reclusive existence in which he rarely released new music but when he did, it was by both groundbreaking and haunting.

You may not be familiar with Walker, but Brian Eno, Radiohead and David Bowie sure are.

The U2 360° tour opening at the Nou Camp Stadium (below) in Barcelona June 30th is the band’s first stadium outing since the 2005 Vertigo Tour and follows the release of their acclaimed album, No Line On The Horizon

Long-time show director Willie Williams has worked again with architect Mark Fisher to create an innovative 360˚ design which will doubtless be a living hell for the roadies, but affords an unobstructed view for the audience.

Produced by Live Nation Global Touring, U2 360° will visit 14 cities across Europe including dates in Milan, Gothenburg, Amsterdam, Paris, Nice, Dublin, Chorzow, Zagreb, Berlin, Gelsenkirchen, London, Sheffield and Glasgow before finishing at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on 22nd August.

Hendrix's Torched Guitar


A photo like this just brings the Hendrix experience alive––you just wish you'd have been in the crowd to see him petrol his axe, then set it alight.

Talk about an indelible image.

The rock legend torched his '65 Fender Strat at the end of a show at the Astoria in Finsbury Park, north London, in March 1967.

The stunt sent roadies rushing to put out the flames and left Hendrix needing treatment for minor burns.

But amid the hubbub press officer Tony Garland cleared away the scorched Stratocaster and stored it in his parents garage in Hove, East Sussex, where it lay forgotten for nearly 40 years.

Even as Hendrix became famous for burning his guitars on stage the instrument remained undiscovered until last year when it was unearthed by Garland's nephew.

The guitar was bought for just over the estimated price at the Fame Bureau's 'It's More Than Rock And Roll' auction in east London by American collector Daniel Boucher.

"I thought I'd have to pay a little bit more for it, actually. I am going to play it, I hope some of it rubs off on me," said Boucher. "It changed music, he raised the bar so high you couldn't get over it. Obviously it is an investment, it couldn't not be an investment for that amount of money, but I bought it because I like it."

The price for a piece of rock history?

$550,000.
